The World of ONA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Level 6<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Red Knight called out, \u201cThe door to the caverns is sealed when all five harvest moons rise. Otherwise, the game requires us to wait until morning. The tower has a spare room, and the fairies stocked the pantry with food.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA room in the tower, and we can stay overnight? We need to reach the cavern door before the fifth moon rises.\u201d I waved goodbye to Ona and sprinted down the hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ona said, \u201cThe Red Knight always wins, master Bromme.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot tonight!\u201d I said, breathless from the virtual descent to the reconstructed tower. I looked back, a hundred yards from where I stood to see Ona casually enjoy the picnic, alone, wearing a maid outfit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Red Knight pulled me into the tower, \u201cMove.\u201d She glanced up at the moon rise. \u201cTime is running out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo you have a name?\u201d\u201d I said to the woman in the doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe game was discontinued,\u201d I said, \u201cWhy is the world still generating new quests?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe light of our love will guide you to the answers you seek\u2026in time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo I need to complete a quest?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe spare room is this way,\u201d said the red knight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd the caverns?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDown those stairs, into the dark.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I ran to the stairs and descended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWait,\u201d said the Red Knight, \u201cI will join you on the quest to save your friend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tower interior was rebuilt with new stones, and the walls were all lined with glowing torches. The spiral stairs were dark, no torches or windows to light the path. I noticed the shadow of a torchlight and looked up, the Red Knight was following close behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a few moments we stood before the large doors to the cavern, and the entrance to a dungeon where the Crystal Breakers should be waiting to stop our progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Red Knight pulled her sword free, kicked the door open and said, \u201cThe Crystal Breakers are not going to let us reach the second door without a fight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I laughed at the dramatic scene, a hero scripted to amaze a television audience, but I pushed the idea out of my thoughts. \u201cAre we being watched? Are people watching us play the game?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Red Knight said nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cavern we entered was empty, and silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I looked around. \u201cDid we miss the party? Where are the dungeon monsters?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Red Knight said, \u201cToo many questions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Crystal Breakers are no longer protecting their home. All were deleted from the game.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHold on a minute,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Source Aura, the player guiding your friend, cannot remove files without the request of another player, due to the security requirement of needing two valid accounts in good standing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLoaf wanted to gain experience, practice fighting in the dungeons, and have fun. Why would he use cheat codes to remove the challenge? The virtual reality connection is online, but he\u2019s not responding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Red Knight said, \u201cThe Source Aura is a dangerous woman. I think your friend was overwhelmed and shouted the command during battle, look at the ground, the footprints.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd the Source Aura deleted the Crystal Breakers instead of helping Loaf. Do you think she could remove other characters, fairies, giants, a knight?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFuture husband!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not looking for the Source Aura if her character has the power to remove you from the game.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAwww, so sweet. Are you protecting me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI need a guide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Red Knight turned and walked into the cavern, the wide entrance hall narrowed into a small corridor.

The light from crystals in the rock shined no more than ten feet ahead, but the glow stayed with us as we made our way deeper in the hillside.

The second cavern door opened into a large room, walls lined with crystal, torch lights on metal stands and a throne.

The Red Knight paused to look around. \u201cThe Crystal Breakers ruled their kingdom from this room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I stopped walking and pointed to the throne, \u201cLoaf!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Loaf was sitting on the throne, the Source Aura at his side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Red Knight pulled her sword and stood between me and the throne. \u201cI will protect you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I laughed and approached the throne without hesitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Loaf said nothing as the Source Aura whispered advice in his ear. He stood up and pointed to the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I turned to look back, waved at the Red Knight who stood ready to fight, and began to notice the floor shake and a crack open between the throne and the entrance to the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh no,\u201d I said, trying to keep my balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The room blurred, and I found myself at home, in the real world, the virtual reality connection was off line and the computer screen flashing, \u201cGame discontinued. All connections locked with final release update in progress. We appreciate the dedicated players who supported the world of ONA-Online Night Aura\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I removed the virtual reality equipment, checked the time, and leaned back in the chair. \u201cIt looks like the game servers are down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHello.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I swung the chair around and stared wide-eyed at the visitor in my room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo you ever clean this room? And why are there figures of warrior women holding all manner of absurd weapons, lining the shelves? I need to know!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Red Knight stood in full armor, and waited for a response. \u201cLoaf is trying to fool you into thinking you returned home. If you disconnect the shared link used for training, he will reconnect with the player behind the Source Aura character.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The computer screen displayed a short message. \u201cLevel seven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
